Sen. Hopgood, Rep. Roberts to Provide Testimony at Canadian Nuclear Waste Repository Hearing
Lansing, Mich. - State Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood (D – Taylor) and State Representative Sarah Roberts (D – St. Clair Shores) will be available for comment prior to their presentation today before the Joint Review Panel on the proposed Canadian underground radioactive nuclear waste repository off the shore of Lake Huron.
Hopgood and Roberts will provide commentary in opposition to the project, which could greatly endanger the water quality of the Great Lakes, and the main drinking water intakes for southeast Michigan. They will also inform the Joint Review Panel of their support for the Request for Rulemaking regarding decommissioned nuclear waste filed by thirty Canadian and American civil society organizations. The request calls for the hearings to be suspended until Ontario Power Generation (OPG) clarifies the actual volume and types of radioactive wastes it plans to store at the facility.
The hearing, which takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion located at 219 Lambton Street in Kincardine, Ontario, will be broadcast live at http://jrp.canadacast.ca/. Senator Hopgood and Representative Roberts are scheduled to present in the day’s afternoon session which begins at 2:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.
